My Friend Linda – FOLKART GALLERY – Style Compass Media
Words: Monica M Lawton – Style Compass Media
I didn’t lose a friend, she’s moved on to the next realm. I met Linda 4 years ago, just by happenstance. Several months prior to meeting her, I had just started my then online magazine, Speaking Out of Turn Magazine.
The Photographer Kenza le Bas, who shot the cover shoot, suggested we use Frida Khalo as an inspiration, which I agreed. I recalled walking past their shop on Legion, Seminyak which had jewelry that resonated with this ‘Frida Khalo’ theme. I’d never met, or spoken with the owners, however the sales staff gave me Linda’s business partner, John’s email. I emailed him my idea, he granted me permission, the shoot went off without a hitch. Later I emailed the results of the shoot to John, however, I never heard back from him. Many months later I was walking along Jl. Laksmana (Oberoi street), and I recognized the signage lettering from the store on Legion. I walked in FOLKART Gallery, to see Linda sitting behind a desk, she smiled, and said ‘welcome’. I’m from Middle America, so I know a fellow Midwestern accent when I hear one. We began speaking for what may have been for 2 hours.
I began looking around, only to realize this was the same jewelry I had borrowed to style my ‘Frida Khalo’ inspired magazine cover shoot. Linda had no idea it had even taken place, I asked permission to use her computer, to upload the cover shoot, featuring mostly all of Folkart Gallery’s jewelry.
There were many photo shoots to follow which Linda, and John gladly permitted me to borrow, even allowing me to use their home for shoots. Now I know as a stylist, it’s not uncommon to borrow items to style ad campaigns, but their items were antique, private museum quality. I was learning each story about the items, as I selected them. I once asked John why he trusted me which such priceless antique pieces, he replied, oh I researched you, and your famous mother, you checked out!
Linda gave me the most sound advice, which only until recently did I execute. She gave her time, and knowledge freely, and I am honored that we met in this lifetime.
I didn’t lose a friend, she’s here with me now…
